Spots Still Available for Big Bend Ranch Camping, Photo Tour

Big Bend Ranch State Park will host the first in a series of photography tours Feb. 24-26 that involves participants camping out with camera in tow  in some of the sprawling West Texas park’s most rugged, remote and scenic locations. Park volunteer Gary Nored, a former teacher and accomplished photographer, will lead the tour. On Saturday, Feb. 25, Nored will lead an intimate group to Guale Mesa, accessible only by four-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicles, where participants will set up camp on a high bluff overlooking Rancherias Canyon and two mountain ranges. There are no classroom activities, but Nored will share his professional advice during two days of uninterrupted photography. The tour price is $350, which includes one night’s lodging at the park’s Bunkhouse, one night of camping, all meals and transportation. Call (432) 358-4444 make a reservation. Come celebrate Texas independence in Washington

Texas turns 176 and you’re invited to the state’s birthday celebration March 3-4 at the site of the Independence Convention of 1836 at the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. Re-enactors in period dress will comingle with visitors as members of the Texas Army and other settlers while music is played and stories are told of Texas’ past. Food is provided with a Texas-sized birthday cake after the event’s formal ceremony Sunday. The park and all tours and demonstrations are free to the public. This event is accessible for the mobility impaired. Lavaca Bay opens Feb. 2 for commercial oyster harvest

Lavaca Bay areas 1-3 are open to commercial oyster harvest as of 12:01 a.m. Feb. 2. These conditionally approved areas and Espiritu Santo Bay are the only bays currently open to shellfish harvesting at this time. The Texas Department of State Health Services will continue to monitor the red tide and will open other areas for harvesting when it is safe to do so. For the latest information on the opening and closing of oyster harvest areas, call DSHS at 1-800-685-0361.

Ripley's celebrates the art of sword swallowing on World Sword Swallower's Day

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas. (Feb. 3, 2012) - More than 20 sword swallowers will be "dropping swords" at Ripley's Believe It or Not! Odditoriums worldwide at 2:25 p.m. on February 25, in celebration of the 6th annual World Sword Swallower's Day.

In excess of 125 feet of solid steel is set to go down the hatch - hopefully without a scratch!

In the Metroplex, Shel Higgens will perform a free sword swallowing demonstration outside Ripley's Believe It or Not! Grand Prairie Odditorium, located at 601 East Palace Parkway. The show will start at 2:00 p.m. local time and culminate with an official "swallow" that will take place at 2:25:12 p.m. to coincide with the 2/25/12 date.
